In the original Silent Hill, protagonist Harry Mason is just trying to track down his missing daughter, Cheryl, in the sleepy, fog-filled titular town, though ends up become an unwitting pawn for the local cult.

Harry eventually encounters Dahlia Gillespie, who claims to want to help him get rid of the darkness pervading throughout Silent Hill.

She tasks Harry with stopping the Mark of Samael from being inscribed across town, telling him that if he can't stop Alessa from completing the five marks, Silent Hill will be forever plunged into darkness.

Yet it's revealed much later in the game that Dahlia was playing Harry like a damn fiddle all along, and the marks were actually the Seal of Metatron, intended to protect the town from the darkness.

Furthermore, she sent Harry on this mission to bring Alessa, her daughter, back to her, so she could use her as a vessel to birth the god that she and her cult worships.

The various endings that follow are basically just different flavours of grim, but in taking Dahlia at face value, Harry only aided her in bringing the deity to life.
