Arc The Lad: Twilight of the Spirits is proof perfect that no good deed goes unpunished, as early on in the game you'll be tasked with saving a seemingly harmless old man, Zev, from being attacked by a pack of Suskle Squirrels.

In fact, saving Zev is mandatory and failing to do so will result in a Game Over, and there's a very special reason for this.

Zev becomes a minor support character throughout the campaign, offering occasional aid to the player on their quest, until he reveals near the end of the game that he's actually The Divine Ruler - a human who attained dark powers 3,000 years prior and is the series' overarching antagonist, The Lord of the Black Abyss.

Moreover, Zev reveals that he has been manipulating the heroes the entire time, helping them acquire the magical Great Spirit Stones in order to then snatch them for himself and use their powers to once again become the Lord of the Black Abyss.

It's never the ones you expect, eh?
