Never underestimate the tunnel vision that grief gives you. Never doubt the lengths your mind will go to freeze out every dissenting voice when it has itself set on a solution to your pain.

For a lesson in this, look no further than Wander from Shadow Of The Colossus.

We don't know much about our hero Wander, all we concretely know is that he loved a woman named Mano. But when Mano dies, Wander is tempted by a demon into a desperate bargain to bring her back to life. If Wander wishes to see Mano again, he must destroy the Colossi, 16 gigantic, ancient, powerful beasts.

The demon's bargain is so transparently untrustworthy that it's a testament to Wander's grief and desperation that he doesn't immediately see right through it. But sure enough, Wander does what the demon asks, killing these majestic, unique creatures throughout the game. A task that ends up costing him everything in the end.

Even though the demon is ultimately defeated in the end, it doesn't change the damage Wander inflicted. 16 unique creatures have been taken out of the world, and the world is all the lesser for it.
