10 Video Game Hoaxes That Completely Fooled Everyone

8. Final Fantasy VII - Resurrecting Aeris

The death of Aeris in Final Fantasy VII probably stands as the first real emotionally resonant experience I ever had in a video game. Aeris€™ demise at the hands of Sephiroth in the Ancient City was devastating to me and countless others, to the point that we were all ready to believe this hoax - just give us anything to bring her back! After pictures surfaced of Aeris fighting in someone€™s main party close to the end of FFVII€™s story, countless theories and supposed guides emerged containing methods through which you could resurrect her; tasks included raising the level of the Revive materia after it€™s already been mastered or completing specific tasks at specific times in the storyline (effectively meaning that you€™d need to know what you were trying to do before Aeris had actually croaked). Unfortunately, there is no known method to resurrecting Aeris after she€™s gone (it€™s such an important story element that once Sephiroth kills her, bringing her back would mess with everything); the whole thing is an elaborate hoax. I mean, you can bring her back, using an Action Replay or similar cheat device, but only in character model form, as a golem who never speaks, only follows your prompts. Nevertheless, there are still those who believe, neigh insist, that bringing her back organically is possible. I€™m not going to try it though. Sometimes, dead is better.
