10 Video Game Inventions That Were Obviously Going To Kill You

9. GLaDOS - Portal

Atomic Heart
Valve

Though Portal kicks off with protagonist Chell being guided through a series of test chambers by AI GLaDOS with the promise of cake to come, given pop-culture's history of malevolent turncoat AIs, it wasn't hard to quickly become suspicious of GLaDOS' motives.

Throughout the game the test chambers become increasingly perilous for Chell, leaving no room for doubt that GLaDOS is indeed actively attempting to kill her.

This culminates in GLaDOS even trying to incinerate Chell, but when she escapes, GLaDOS unconvincingly pawns it off as yet another planned part of the test scenario.

We then learn that GLaDOS in fact murdered all of the test center's prior inhabitants and that, indeed, the cake is a damn lie.

Of course, GLaDOS' quirky, deadpan personality is so fundamentally, jarringly offputting from the very start of the game that there was never much doubt she had not-pure intent and we'd eventually have to face off against her.
