10 Video Game Level Types That Must Die Next Generation
1. Escort Missions
I'm willing to bet that this was most likely the one most of you expected to be at number one. Well, good guess. However, this is here for two reasons. The first one is obvious: escort missions are universally despised amongst the gaming community. But we also wanted to conclude with this because we'd like to end on a somewhat positive note, as this entry also represents a glimmer of light for what may come in the next generation.
Let's get the obvious out of the way first: there is absolutely nothing worse than having to escort someone in a game.
More often than not they refuse to move faster than a walking pace which not only slows you down but your character has usually only been designed to run or at least jog so it's the most awkward thing ever, they often freak out and make noise if you get too far from them, they can usually take about one quarter of a bullet's worth of damage before garnering you a game over, sometimes you're actually capable of injuring them, also garnering you a game over... look, I'm talking about Ashley, okay? Of course I'm talking about Ashley.
However, in recent years developers have actually learned from the venomous hatred spewed towards escort missions. Both Bioshock: Infinite and The Last Of Us were essentially two massive escort missions, except your wards couldn't be harmed, even whilst they openly wandered through a room full of enemies. And, more recently, A Plague Tale did the same thing, except your ward could be killed... but so could you, in a single hit, which managed to negate what should've been irritating and lent to the gameplay, specifically your level of care.
So, hey, here's hoping, guys, maybe the industry has gotten the memo.
