10 Video Game Levels Removed For Being Too Hard
5. The Path to Malus - Shadow of the Colossus
Much has been written about the eye-watering amount of content cut from Shadow of the Colossus.
After all, the epic boss rush adventure game originally started out with concepts for 48 different colossi, as was ultimately boiled down to "only" 16 for the final retail release.
But in addition to bosses getting the chop, select locales in the game were also removed - one of them being a pivotal area near the very end of the game.
In order to reach the sixteenth and final colossus Malus, players have to run through tunnels and hide behind walls to avoid the boss' energy projectiles. It's a basically linear path where there's little chance of players getting lost, but this wasn't always the way.
Originally, the lead up to fighting Malus was considerably trickier, with players having to essentially navigate a labyrinth of tunnels and passageways to get to him.
However, Team Ico apparently decided that this was too complex, and so boiled it down to a more straightforward obstacle course. Given that Malus is a plenty challenging boss in his own right, it was probably the right call to tone down the prelude somewhat.
