2. Confronting Dutch - Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)
Throughout Red Dead Redemption 2, players witness the downfall of the notorious Van der Linde gang through the eyes of gruff but kind-hearted protagonist Arthur Morgan.
After a botched heist causes the gang to go on the run, the plot sees the group try to acquire the funds needed to give up their criminal ways and live a quiet life. However, things only get worse when their actions put them in the sights of Pinkerton agents, with each of gang leader Dutch's plans ending in disaster.
With Arthur now facing his own mortality after being diagnosed with tuberculosis, tensions hit their breaking point when Dutch leaves John for dead and abandons Abigail when she’s captured by the Pinkertons. Riding back to camp to confront Dutch having rescued Abigail, players know that whatever happens next cannot be good.
The law arrives as a schism forms amongst the remaining gang members, and the feeling of impending doom is all but confirmed when Arthur’s horse is killed in the ensuing gunfight.
Whether players choose to help John escape or return to steal the gang’s money, they know that Arthur’s fate is sealed. But this doesn’t make his last moments any less devastating.
