There's plenty of tragic characters throughout gaming but it's hard to top the woes that Otacon goes through as the Metal Gear Solid story progresses. Otacon is introduced as the designer of Metal Gear REX (without knowing it was to be used as a nuclear weapon) and his first appearance in the game is embarrassing to say the least. He's depicted as an anime-loving coward who hides in lockers and wets himself at the first sign of danger. At first, he seems like a complete waste of space. Actually, Otacon goes on to become one of Metal Gear Solid's best characters. Despite lacking physical prowess, his keen intellect makes him Snake's biggest ally and, despite some major emotional baggage, he continues to work with Snake (and Raiden for a portion of Metal Gear Solid 2) to prevent the rise of evil within the world. Even then, it would be so easy to write Otacon off. The culmination of Metal Gear Solid 2 sees his step-sister Emma killed by Vamp and Otacon falls into a deep despair that could have destroyed the character. Of course, under Snake's support, he rallies and saves the hostages of Big Shell while still providing support to Raiden; it would seem that Otacon works best when face to face with adversity. To call a man as intelligent as Otacon a little guy might seem strange but his weedy persona, cowardly introduction and personal turmoil could have turned him into an empty shell. It didn't and the Metal Gear Solid series benefited massively as a result.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
