10 Video Game Mechanics All Players HATE

1. Escort Missions

Hello, player. There's an NPC here that has no idea how to look after themselves or reach their destination without a hand to hold. Any chance you're free to do it?

As much as we all wish we could say no, it's rarely an option.

Escort missions are the gaming equivalent of babysitting: keep this NPC safe from harm, make sure they don't fall too far behind or get too far ahead, and make sure they don't get carried away by huge zombie priests (yes, Ashley from Resident Evil 4, that means you).

While usually it's a simple enough task on the surface, it's rarely ever as easy as it sounds. Whether the difficulty lies in the AI's complete lack of self-preservation instincts, or whether the challenge is in keeping your cool long enough not to just switch the game off and play something else, escort missions are never any fun.

As an added bonus, refer back to entry 9 on this list about slow NPCs, and you may just have another reason to hate this awful, awful mechanic.
