10 Video Game Mistakes Left In To Troll You
8. Pirhana - Wipeout
Thanks to the collaboration of Brit-cool graphic design studio The Designers Republic, 1995's pioneering PlayStation racer WipeOut presented a supremely stylish yet realistic vision of the future. That realism, it seems, extended to the gradual and sadly inevitable decay of spelling standards.
For some inexplicable reason, the series' third iteration, the otherwise ultra-polished Wipeout 3, manages to badly bungle the name of Team Piranha-Advanced', displaying them as 'Team Pirhana-a' (the manual is hardly any better, misaligning 'Team Pirhan' with the wrong logo).
It's not an overly common or especially intuitive spelling, and so a translation error here is eminently understandable - but for the fact that, despite Wipeout 3's neo-Tokyo aesthetic, it was developed in Leeds. To be fair, the West Yorkshire city isn't particularly known for tropical, man-eating fish populating its canals.
By the next game, Wipeout Fusion, the (fictionally) Brazilian team had apparently hired a proof-reader: they're now rendered accurately as Piranha. According to the game, the name change came about following the merger of two smaller teams - Pir and Hana - hence the 'mispelling'. This was even referenced in prequel Wipeout 2048, which features a prototype racer from the nascent team under the banner 'Pir-Hana'. Meant it all along.
