10 Video Game Mistakes Left In To Troll You
7. Lara's Assets - Tomb Raider
The original Tomb Raider's Lara Croft wasn't quite the antediluvian icon of objectification she's made out to be these days, though you can't blame series neophytes for thinking that when they get an eyeful of her razor sharp 1995 'assets'.
In fact, so ludicrous are Lara's polygonal pointers that it's easy to think they must have been some sort of a mistake, a piece of bust bust coding, if you will. And indeed, that is precisely the case, as Core Design's Nigel West explained during a press conference in 2000.
According to the programmer, a 'simple miscalculation' resulted in Ms. Croft's massively exaggerated proportions, which, owing to the late stage of the game's development, simply could not be reversed (even though it would have taken, like, five seconds). Not that it mattered: when publishers Eidos saw the character, they reasoned people "probably wouldn't notice" that Lara looked like a doorstop, and that her inflated chest wouldn't affect the game's sales.
Obviously, and eye-rollingly, they were bang on.
