10 Video Game “Mistakes” That Were Totally Intentional
2. "Immortal" Companions In Fallout 3
One of the best features of the Fallout series is the ability to recruit companions to join you on your journey, but these characters can demonstrate some slightly strange behaviour. For instance, they're totally immune to radiation poisoning and will sometimes refuse to give you weapons or items.
This originally started out as a bit of a bug since the decision to add companions to the games was quite a late one and much of the game's code had already been written. Instead of creating whole new sections of code specifically for companions, the developers used NPC code and changed it up a little. Since NPCs aren't affected by radiation, neither are the companions.
The development team left this in, because it would have been problematic to have to keep curing your companions all the time as well as yourself.
In addition, since the NPCs usually want things or money in exchange for other items, some companions will refuse to give you stuff unless you offer them something in return. The developers actually really liked this feature too as it gave the companions a sense of autonomy and personality, rather than having them just follow the player's orders at all times.
