10 Video Game Mistakes You Can't Unsee
8. A "Disappearing" Character - Mother 3
A bit of camera manipulation never hurt anyone. Well, unless we count Mr Saturn’s integrity, that damn liar. This error is simple and quite funny, reminding us of something similar to the performance of a play and its stage.
In the Game Boy Advance game Mother 3, Mr Saturn says to the player that he’s leaving and then walks off screen.
However, if the player walks up slightly, moving the camera, you can see that Mr Saturn hasn’t actually gone anywhere. He’s just standing off screen, continuing to listen to the conversation.
Reading up on the developers’ thoughts, it’s hard to tell if this was a mistake they kept in, or something intentional.
Game writer, Shigesato Itoi, says he thought it would be funny to see a character walk off screen and then just stop, standing there. Which… it is, but I don’t think he needed to go on record and explain it so literally.
