After narrowly escaping a Mind Flayer ship at the start of Baldur’s Gate 3, the player’s main goal is to find a way to stop the tadpole their character has been infected with from turning them into one of the tentacled monstrosities.

Following dozens of hours of completing epic quests and befriending memorable companions, players will uncover a sinister plot which aims to use the tadpoles to control the population. All of this leads to players confronting the Elder Brain, the root of all their problems, as they approach the climactic final battle.

Upon facing the Elder Brain players are given a series of increasingly difficult skill checks to subdue the creature using the artifacts collected from the game’s main bosses. The target to beat rises with each roll until players are met with an imposing difficulty class of 99.

Even with maximum proficiency bonuses and boosts from equipment and buffs this check is almost impossible to beat. The only way that players can succeed is by getting a critical success from rolling a natural 20.

Overcoming the odds still won't be enough, however. No matter what, the brain always overpowers players, reinforcing how formidable it is before the final fight begins.
