10 Video Game NPCs Nobody Wanted To Kill (But You HAD To)

3. Harold (Fallout 3)

Everyone has a firm grasp on the horrors of what would happen in a post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland. But, damn, Bethesda has often gone in directions you'd never expect, with one of the most shocking and fascinating being the horrid fate of poor, poor Harold.

Harold is a loveable former human suffering from the Forced Evolutionary Virus. He appears in all three of the first Fallout games, but it's the third where his post-Great War life has gotten truly out of hand.

When you encounter him in the game, you learn that he is rooted to the ground in Oasis and has become a living tree.

When talking with Harold, he begs you to end his life, which he claims would be a favour to him. Naturally, killing him is a tough call, as not only would you be murdering a nice person, but the residents of Oasis are keen to keep him alive as he's helping to maintain the local greenery.

Still, there is only one real choice. No one should spend their lives as a fully-sentient tree. Harold, it's been a pleasure, now off you go.
