Nintendo's catalogue of iconic characters is never-ending. The company's ability to make you fall in love with their creations is on par with Disney, and the beloved dinosaur Yoshi is among their best. But that's what makes it so painful whenever you have to sacrifice the little guy for an extra jump.

The Super Mario series offers a flawless platforming challenge, and sometimes you need a bit of additional elevation. In Super Mario World (1990), a means to get some of that extra height was provided via Yoshi, who you could jump off after making them jump, adding an extra boost.

If you needed to make a big leap and had no other options, then, sorry Yoshi, but it's down into the depths you go and up for the Italian plumber. Of course, there were some ways to work around this, but finding them was often challenging.

Sadly, the sacrifice of Yoshi is a tradition that has continued, especially in Mario map creations. Whether it's Super Mario Maker's fan-made levels or hand-cramping Kaizo maps, some people get a kick out of forcing you to kill your beloved dino.
