10 Video Game NPCs Who Were Totally Overpowered

4. Sephiroth - Final Fantasy VII

Resident evil 7 jack baker
Square Enix

As anyone with any interest in the gaming sphere knows, Sephiroth is one of the most infamous villains ever. He is first introduced to the player through references from protagonist Cloud Strife, who remembers him as an unparalleled warrior, and his inspiration to join SOLDIER.

Cloud acknowledges that nobody but Sephiroth had the strength to wield the iconic Masamune blade. This is quite a statement from somebody who brandishes the absurdly large Buster Sword, but when seen in battle next to a mere mortal, it’s plain to see just what Sephiroth can do.

In the flashback scene that Cloud instigates with the party on their arrival in Kalm, the player witnesses the pair's fateful journey to Nibelheim. During it, several battles are instigated, in which the player has only a five-years-younger Cloud and Sephiroth in their party.

The silver-haired swordsman cannot be controlled by the player, but effortlessly dispatches enemies with a few swings of his blade or casts of his elemental magic Materia. Cloud, meanwhile, deals pitiful damage, and tends to have to be revived by Sephiroth with his meagre HP.

Part of the reason Sephiroth still enjoys his reputation as a formidable villain is that the player was given the chance to watch him in action in this way.
