10 Video Game NPCs Who Were Totally Overpowered

5. Metal Gear Solid - Psycho Mantis

Through the course of PlayStation classic Metal Gear Solid, Solid Snake systematically takes down much of the elite FOXHOUND unit. Each of these foes, from Vulcan Raven to Liquid Snake himself, have extraordinary combat capabilities. Between them, they make up one of the greatest boss battle rosters in gaming.

One of the most memorable of these encounters is the clash with Psycho Mantis, the self-proclaimed "most powerful practitioner of psychokinesis and telepathy in the world!" To his credit, he certainly has the ability to back up this claim. He can directly control the actions of others, throw heavy objects across the room with his mind, and even read the player's every action and evade every attack. He can also, essentially, fly.

If not for the now-iconic controller port trick, Mantis was all but invincible as a result. The whole HIDEO business was a classic piece of Hideo Kojima innovation, as was Mantis’ ability to comment on the player's behaviour up to that point in the game ("you're extremely cautious around traps").

An imposing, formidable and menacing foe who had a great impact on the story and the huge impression the game left. Mantis was so much more than just a great boss battle.
