10 Video Game NPCs You Should NEVER Kill

1. Oswald Of Carim - Dark Souls

In Demon's Souls, the sort-of blueprint of the Soulsbourne series, players could very easily ruin their campaign if they aggravated friendly NPCs. Whether you started the fight intentionally or not, any character you've lumped over the head won't stop fighting back until you put them down for good. There's no way to make peace with them and if they were key to the main questline then that's a really rather awful way for your game to end.

So, for all of its own brutality, Dark Souls included Oswald of Carim to fix this.

By ringing the Bell of Awakening at the Undead Parish, the player can speak to and use the services of Oswald providing they can afford it. As a pardoner, Oswald is able to basically calm down any upset NPCs. This is obviously a solution to this issue... unless you decide that Oswald's creepy laughs are reason enough to take an axe to his skull.

Yes, as is the way in this franchise, it's absolutely possible to kill Oswald - and turn Dark Souls back into Demon's Souls. If the pardoner is angry at you he won't offer his power and thus this solution is gone for good, just like that.

Forget looking a gift horse in the mouth, you just punched it and now you'll suffer for it.
