10 Video Game Openings Designed To Make You Quit
9. Max Payne 3
Leading up to the release of Max Payne 3, fans of the series would not stop complaining about Max being transformed into a bald slob who wears extra-large Hawaiian shirts. Starting the game, this skin-deep issue was quickly replaced with the vomit-inducing style of the cutscenes.
In the opening cinematic, the transitions from the present to past and future are rough, and the visual effects mirror a 3D movie when you’re not wearing the required glasses - there’s a motion blur, the images are doubled and a purple filter persistently strains your eyes.
Intended to represent Payne’s intoxication and constant hangovers, the game’s cinematics succeed in making you empathise with the nausea of a recovering alcoholic. Problem is that they don’t only happen once or twice, they can’t be disabled, and make long sessions of playtime physically impossible.
Rather than allowing gamers’ eyes to adjust to the title’s special effects, the opening carelessly implements them everywhere for a whole ten-minutes. This results in throbbing heads, aching eyes and people abandoning the game as they anticipate throwing-up.
