10 Video Game Openings That Pissed Everyone Off

1. Tutorial - Driver

One of the worst feelings in the world is being told to do something but not told how. We’ve all been there; fretting and panicking if we’ve somehow missed some important key info or, in fact, if we’re just too stupid and useless. Driver’s tutorial looks down and mocks you from above like the peasant you are.

Okay, that might sound dramatic but so many players will have incredibly frustrated memories of the original Driver based purely on its tutorial alone. Dropping you into a parking garage and asking you to get to grips with the controls makes sense in theory, but just prompting players with a list of manoeuvre names and asking them to figure it out was sure to result in many never seeing outside of this concrete block.

Before the days of the internet we couldn’t look this kind of thing up, so not only were we supposed to figure out what a “slalom” was but also how to pull it off.

What truly pissed players off though wasn’t the obtuseness alone but also the fact that it wasn’t skippable. If you wanted to experience what publications were calling "a revolution for driving mechanics", you had to prove to the Driver Overlord that you were good enough to be let out of this parking garage purgatory.
