The best game tutorials are the ones where you don’t even think about such a thing and you organically learn by doing. This isn’t always possible depending on the title’s genre and how complex the mechanics are, such is the case with RPGs. If that’s so, you should at least do your best to make them punchy.

Final Fantasy XIII’s opening constantly bombards players with new information on how the battle, upgrade and summon systems work. Not only this but interrupts the gameplay to such an extent that the tutorials feel like a bigger part of the experience than many other aspects. Of course, this isn’t helped by the fact that Final Fantasy XIII’s opening consists of barely disguised corridors with intermittent turn-based battles that are so easy you may as well not have done anything.

You’ll know pretty quickly if this is the Final Fantasy game for you because if the first few hours of hallways and tutorials is a pleasant enough experience, you’ve got a lot more of it to look forward to. Even three quarters of the way into the title, Final Fantasy XIII is still teaching players new things.

With a story that dives right into the action and never slows down to let players get their bearings, Final Fantasy XIII’s opening act is a big red flag for the rest of the adventure.
