The Witcher III: Wild Hunt was a massive success that was wasted no time in getting things started, especially in comparison to what had come before.

What's most irritating about Witcher 2’s prologue is that it really obfuscates the game's true potential behind a truly monotonous start. Huge dumps of exposition and conversational choices can make the players feel as though Witcher is changing genre from its predecessor altogether. Geralt feels less like a monster slayer and more like a character in a high fantasy life-sim.

The opening hours of the game drag to a point of monotony, which is a real issue considering that outside of this section there’s an incredible experience to be had.

Tutorials can be a difficult thing to manage but someone on the Witcher 2 team should’ve perhaps considered that the game could’ve done with giving players at least a little guidance. What action that does happen in the opening hours is all over the place in difficulty, meaning the time you’ve already spent on the slow start to the game feels wasted when you can’t get past the early challenges.

The Witcher 2’s combat in generally is a task worth overcoming, but bouncing from never-ending cutscenes to rage-inducing beatdowns from mobs is enough to turn some players away completely.
