10 Video Game Plot Twists That Punished Loyal Fans

2. You're Not Big Boss - Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Dammit 2015, I thought we were done?!

Halo 5 actually being about Cortana, Arkham Knight's identity being Jason Todd and now this?

What's that? You've reused the Metal Gear Solid 2 twist, and now all of Phantom Pain's character work means nothing because we were playing as a random medic? Why, no wonder everyone was so ready to batter No Man's Sky to death.

So it goes that thanks to internal problems at Konami resulting in whatever madness Kojima had cooking up being thrown in the bin (or online as a half-finished final cutscene, anyway), MGS V's finale reveals that the real Big Boss is off round the world doing nefarious things for the future Metal Gear games in the timeline.

You? You're the medic - a completely crowbarred-in individual with a unique face you could model, so you - the gamer/fan - are now kind of instrumental in the mythology. It's almost incredible, but all that stuff where the adverts talked about showing the "downfall of Big Boss" or how this game would be the "missing link" connecting the other titles together by explaining a former hero's descent into madness? That was all just forgotten about.

Don't get me wrong, Metal Gear Solid V is an exemplary-playing game, but for the fans who stuck by the series for literal decades memorising their Shalashaskas from their Shagohods... this is how it all ends?

I think the only thing left to do is turn to the sky, shake a fist and scream, "LIQUIIIIIIIID!"
