10 Video Game Plots Nobody Fully Understands

2. Metal Gear Series

Hideo Kojima has always been the master of the mind-screw €“ and whether you think he€™'s a genius or not largely depends on whether or not you€™re a fan of the Metal Gear series. The first game was pretty self-contained, but the same cannot be said for the myriad of sequels, prequels and other -equels in the franchise.

Sons of Liberty in particular threw fans for a complete loop when the protagonist turned out to be Raiden rather than Snake, and the following conspiracies created by the Patriots and their far-reaching revelations made for utter chaos. There€™s more of the same in subsequent games, with double and triple-crosses a thing of the norm, talking ghost-arms, clones, supernatural soldiers and nuclear warfare, as well as several different protagonists at different points in the series, each basically the same but with different motivations and different backstories. By the time you reach the final game, you€™ll need a notebook just to keep up, and with MGS V only really adding to the confusion, it€™'s time to get that out again to run through one more time.

It isn'€™t possible to talk about complicated plots without mentioning Metal Gear, and even staunch defenders of the series won'€™t deny that maybe, just maybe, our old pal Hideo could make things a little bit clearer next time.
