10 Video Game Problems That Piss EVERYONE Off
4. Homing "Hit-Scan" Melee Attacks
Anyone who is not a fan ofDark Souls and its various relatives is probably used to hearing, "it's tough, but fair." It's become the mantra of Dark Souls fans trying to get non-Dark Souls fans to play Dark Souls.
But the reason it's become a kind of trademark platitude is because it's true. People speedrun these games naked without ever levelling up and the only reason they can do so is because the mechanical rules of combat are so clearly defined and equally applied. If that Hollow swings its sword and misses you by a hair - it misses you.
But some video game enemies are downright dirty cheaters.
Have you ever felt fully confident that you dodged an attack, and yet were still hit? It's subtle, but you swear your opponent moved ever so slightly, mid-animation, so the attack would would connect even thought it shouldn't have. Like their sword has heat-seeking technology, or in the business, a "hit scan" check, to nail you regardless of anything.
This kind of distortion is especially evident in the Horizon series. A giant robot tiger rotating on an axis mid-leap to hit you even when you dodged at the last second is controller-smashingly unsubtle. It requires you to learn a timing that is completely unnatural and out of sync with what is actually happening on screen.
Ridiculous. Completely ridiculous.
