10 Video Game Quests That Made You Question Your Humanity

1. Possession - The Witcher III

Possession is one of those quests that come along every now and again that is designed to fool both the characters in the game, as well as the players in control.

Faced with having to deal with a rare and dangerous creature known as a Hym that latches on to a person's guilt, Geralt reveals the only way of defeating it and curing Jarl Udalryk's supposed curse is either by defeating it in its own domain or trick it in the hope it moves on to another host.

Working with Cerys an Craite, she begs players to trust her with tricking the creature. She will leave players in a room, and soon reemerge with the Jarl's son, handing him to players and telling them to put him in the oven that's been switched on.

Players then choose whether to believe Cerys and put the baby in the oven, or follow the more instinctively-humane reaction to the command and hand him over to the Jarl's men.

Placing the baby in the furnace will leave Geralt genuinely despairing at their decision, fully believing that they have just incinerated an innocent life. And even though the baby is later revealed to be absolutely fine and the reaction from Geralt was what was needed to encourage the Hym to leave the Jarl, it's still a sobering moment and one that leaves players wondering just how far they'll go with decision-making in the moment.
