10 Video Game Reboots That Saved Iconic Franchises
5. Batman: Arkham Asylum
Before Arkham Asylum hit store shelves Batman was the superhero who had potentially the worst luck when it came to video game adaptations. From lacklustre side-scrollers to even worse beat-em-ups, players weren't exactly spoiled for choice when it came to authentic Dark Knight experiences for their consoles. And going into Arkham Asylum, even the most hardened fans of the Caped Crusader had no reason to believe that Rocksteady's game would change anything substantially. This was a time where licensed releases were potentially more disappointing than ever, so with the announcement that The Dark Knight was getting a new video game outing - based on a much-loved graphic novel no less - everyone just expected to see the adaptation of one of the most revered Batman stories wrangled in translation. But of course Arkham Asylum came out swinging to prove all the naysayers wrong. An incredible experience in its own right, the game not only went on to spawn its own increasingly successful series, but essentially set the benchmark for all future open world third-person action games going forward.
