10 Video Game Reboots That Saved Iconic Franchises

6. Wolfenstein: The New Order

While Wolfenstein has always been a staple of mainstream video games, until recently the series had always languished in the shadows of other, more popular first-person shooters like Doom and Quake. However, the wacky alternate history games still amassed a rather loyal following over the years - a following that probably had to get used to disappointment by the time the late 2000s rolled by. Fortunately though, after a wealth of sub-par action games and a failed reboot in 2009, the series was brought back under the helm of MachineGames in 2014 with the rather low-key release of Wolfenstein: The New Order. Seemingly coming out of nowhere, both fans of the property and players in general had no expectations of The New Order actually being any good. Fortunately for them though, Machine Games' reboot managed to distil everything great about the series into some of the most satisfying first-person shooting combat the genre had seen in years, while also throwing in a surprisingly decent and heartfelt story to boot.
