10 Video Game Remakes Fans Won’t Allow

Leave these alone, or we riot.

Streets Of Rage

Why bother making a new game when you can simply take an old one and remake it? There's been a startling upturn in the amount of remade games being released and it's pretty obvious why - few things empty wallets faster than nostalgia. Don't be too cynical though; most remakes, when done with care, are actually worthwhile.

There are some games that developers should be afraid to revisit though. Video game fans are a passionate bunch at the best of times; but when things displease them, it can get very ugly, very quickly. Remaking a classic game and not doing an exceptional job of it is a surefire way to draw hatred from fans, yet those same fans constantly demand updates to certain games... would you want to be a developer?

In a similar fashion to films, games can draw cult audiences as well; these are the fanbases you really want to avoid upsetting. Not every game on this list would classify as a cult title but there are a few; developers beware, your reputations could be on the line if you don't follow this article's advice. For various reasons the ten games on this list are best left alone as the fans would go insane if the remade versions didn't live up to their insanely high standards. Some games on this list might actually benefit from a revision but the risk just wouldn't be worth it; it's better to play it safe sometimes and leave things as they are.

As always, if you want to add your opinion, feel free to leave it in the comments below.

10. Psychonauts

It must be amazing to live inside the mind of Tim Schafer. His bonkers (yet brilliant) approach to game design has created some of the most unique experiences in all of the medium and he's a pretty funny guy to boot; after all, he did co-create the Monkey Island series. As such, pretty much any Double Fine game could appear on this list; they're all unique, entertaining games which still to this day are highly playable.

The demand for a follow-up to Psychonauts is impressive though. The game is all about entering people's minds and exploring their imaginations; it's pretty crazy (in a good way) as a result. There's also no conclusive end to the game, leaving it wide open for a sequel, yet a follow-up doesn't seem to be a priority for Double Fine.

Could the game be remade for next gen consoles with a new look? Absolutely, but what most people would prefer to see is a brand new game. After all, Psychonauts' PC release was already upgraded to high-definition standards; anybody interested in playing the game with better graphics should really be looking there. Most fans will want to see a continuation to the game, not a revisit to the original.

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
