10 Video Game Remakes NO ONE Asked For
4. Secret Of Mana
Secret of Mana was among the most beloved SNES games, thanks to its real-time battle mechanics, beautiful soundtrack, charming characters, and intricate story. For this reason, role-playing lovers were up for a three-dimensional reimagining of the Square classic with modern graphics, akin to Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Although Q Studios released a 3D remake in 2018, it was anything but modern. The graphical upgrade is so mild, Secret of Mana 3D wouldn't look out of place on the PS2.
There were a couple of improvements, including an on-screen map, more accessible save points, and improved companion AI, but SOM 3D still felt like a minimal effort collectively.
Players will be tempted to mute the cut-scenes, due to the monotonous and stilted voice-acting. Although the fight system was great in the '90s, it felt dated now. (The Trials Of Mana remake learned from this mistake by updating the fighting mechanics.) This version also didn't smooth out any issues the original suffered, including the glitches and difficulty spikes.
Now, that's not suggesting there isn't a demand for a Secret of Mana reimagining. However, this version was so bare-bones, it feels more like a glorified remaster than a legit remake.
