The 3DS' hardware specs really are perfect when it comes to reformatting Nintendo's older games. They allow for just the right amount of visual overhauling without the specificity or background detail of an "HD version". Essentially in Star Fox's case, it's as if it released fresh to an entire different generation.

Interestingly, this 3DS version has a revamped control scheme and smoothed over difficulty to aid in playing with motion controls, but you can also pick the authentic N64 difficulty if you're after more of a challenge. Star Fox blends sci-fi influences, dogfights and bombing runs with some of the most button-mashing shooter gameplay the company have ever devised. It's clearly their most accomplished foray into rail shooters thanks to your ships array of abilities, and is just as enjoyable and loveable today as ever.

What started as a mind-melting experiment into primitive 3D gaming on the SNES (resulting in frame rate woes and low-res sprites aplenty) has blossomed into one of the most playable action games of all time - one that feels even more special on a handheld.
