10 Video Game Remasters That Blow Their Originals Out The Water

9. Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen

With 'only' 150 Pokemon, and the one region to explore, the original Pokemon Red and Blue were good, but they were lacking in a few areas. On the other side of the spectrum, the recent ones have featured almost too much stuff, which is why the remakes of the original games are considered (for the purposes of this article anyway) the sweet spot of the whole series; big enough to get an great Pokemon experience but still small enough to not be overwhelmed. The recent Pokemon games have over 700 creatures for you to catch, which is quite a lot no matter how you look at it. FireRed/LeafGreen has 'only' 350 Pokemon to hunt, which is more than enough to contend with. However, the biggest - and arguably the best - change is the graphical and musical overhaul of the Kanto region. The old games had a very bland and small game world that felt like something out of a horror movie whereas the new games feel expansive, colourful, and vibrant. Everything has a 'same but different' feel about it, which is great at hooking in old players but charming enough to draw new players. With the new Pokemon games gradually becoming more of a hidden exercise in learning mathematical algorithms and the old ones resembling something out of Silent Hill (especially Lavender Town), the FireRed/LeafGreen era of games was the perfect balance of colour, gameplay and game world size.

My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem. Instead, all I've done so far is put a few hundred words together in an attempt to make people laugh. You can follow me at @Fry_ying_pan but don't be offended if I don't tweet back. It's usually because I've spent too long trying to think up a witty response that the reply window has closed.
