10 Video Game Remasters That Blow Their Originals Out The Water

3. Final Fantasy IV DS

When Final Fantasy IV was released way back in 1991, it was beloved by all for upping the ante in terms of complex characterisation and a surprisingly dark story. Realising how well these things have stood the test of time, Square Enix decided to remaster FFIV because they figured "Why not?". What resulted was a remake that not only is brilliant in its own right, but one that far outshines the original. Unsurprisingly, this version of the game looks and sounds substantially better than the original SNES version. There is also an almost absurd amount of additional content to wade through as well. There's a new ability system, new abilities and summons, new mini-games, a higher difficulty level, a new game plus feature, and the ability to use Golbez as a playable character albeit with a few cheats. And that's not even getting to additions to the much lauded story and character stuff yet. Some of the more intimate character interactions such as Cecil and Rosa's late night chat have been improved through the use of cinematic cut-scenes. Original character development ideas that were left out in the SNES version were reincorporated such as flashbacks to Cecil and Kain's childhoods and how Golbez became evil in the first place. As good as the Final Fantasy IV remake is, it's not the only brilliant remaster that Square Enix have done with a great Final Fantasy title...

My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem. Instead, all I've done so far is put a few hundred words together in an attempt to make people laugh. You can follow me at @Fry_ying_pan but don't be offended if I don't tweet back. It's usually because I've spent too long trying to think up a witty response that the reply window has closed.
