Super Mario Bros is arguably one of the first home console games ever to become a mainstream success and enter popular culture. However, as the adventures of everyone's favourite moustachioed plumber was exclusive to the Nintendo Entertainment System, clones began flooding the market offering similar sidescrolling action on other platforms.

Ported to just about every non-Nintendo platform, The Great Giana Sisters was one of many Super Mario Bros clones available on the market at that time but went one step further than many of its contemporaries by including an opening level that practically mirrored its iconic counterpart's.

Much like some of the other games featured on this list, TGGS wasn't necessarily a terrible game on its own merits, but comparisons to its ever-so obvious source material didn't exactly paint it in a positive light.

Never known for being lax when it comes to potential legal infractions, an urban legend claims Nintendo took TGGS publisher Rainbow Arts to court, but while this wasn't actually the case, it was eventually largely withdrawn from sale due to copyright issues, likely to the surprise of no one.
