Donkey Kong's hidden easter egg took people twenty years to discover, and the payoff after all this time was disappointing, to say the least.

In 2008, the writer behind the Atari port of the arcade version of the game, Landon Dyer, revealed to the world that there was an easter egg in the game that no one had yet discovered. Dyer admitted that he had forgotten what the easter egg was and how to activate it, but assured everyone that it was not worth the effort.

Despite Dyer's warning, the confession piqued people's curiosity, and they began searching for the secret. The process of triggering it turned out to be stupidly elaborate. The player had to get an exact high score of either 37,000 or 73,000; they had to lose all their lives and then get a game over by falling; and finally, they had to change the game's difficulty to 4.

Their reward for doing all of this was just as disappointing as what Dyer had promised. It was just the writer's three initials appearing on the title screen. However, the simplicity of this easter egg aside, it is fascinating how long it's been kept a secret.
