10 Video Game Secrets So Well Hidden Developers Had To Help You Find Them
3. Happy Birthday, Lauren! - Halo 3
The secret in Halo 3 probably wasn't discovered for the longest time because it was actually intended to be viewed by only one person. More specifically, Lauren, the wife of one of the game's developers.
Yes, the loading screen for Halo 3 contained a secret birthday message for programmer Adrian Perez's wife Lauren that wasn't discovered until 2012. The person who revealed the secret wasn't actually Perez himself, but another member of the Bungee team, Jon Cable, who hinted at its existence in one of Bungee's Mail Sack posts.
Triggering the message required the player to really go out of their way, so it made sense that no one was able to discover it before the reveal. In order to make the message appear, the player had to go into offline mode on their Xbox and manually change the date to December 25: Lauren's birthday.
Now, depending on whether Lauren knew how to access the message, this was either one of the best birthday gifts ever or the worst. Regardless, it immortalized her name as part of one of the most perplexing and elaborate secrets in Halo's history.
