10 Video Game Secrets You Didn't See Coming

8. Guybrush Threepkiller - Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II

With George Lucas founding the studio back in 1982, it’s no surprise that the LucasArts name is so heavily affiliated with the film director’s Star Wars franchise. But LucasArts are more than just an outlet for spin-off media of the far, far away galaxy.

The Monkey Island series has had its ups and downs over the years, with large swathes of time where the IP has gone dormant. After Escape from Monkey Island in 2000, Guybrush Threepwood and friends went dark for nearly a decade. Suddenly however, there was a renewed interest in the brand with a couple of rereleases and a brand new game.

How does this relate to Star Wars?

In 2010, LucasArts released The Force Unleashed II which continues the story of Darth Vader’s training of his apprentice Starkiller. It’s not that Star Wars games hadn’t let you play as the Sith before, but Force Unleashed II was considered a fairly dark tale when it released.

Players discovered they could bring the mood back up though by indiscriminately destroying a few slot machines to unlock the Guybrush Threepkiller costume.

Considering the rest of the base game’s outfits are all variations on traditional Star Wars looks and garbs, this novelty Guybrush skin is certainly unexpected in more ways than one. Seeing adventure gaming’s favourite pirate wielding lightsabers and force powers remains a strange sight indeed.
