10 Video Game Sequel Baits That Went Nowhere
1. The End Of Umbrella - Resident Evil
With over 25 years of history, Resident Evil has a deep lore and a lot of unresolved stories.
Both games subtitled “Revelations” actually pose bigger post-credits questions that they answer, the true goals of superspy Ada Wong remain a mystery even still and so many classic characters have been missing for over a decade. Despite all this, the biggest rugpull comes from how the franchise handled the defeat of its ultimate antagonist.
Resident Evil 2 ends with naive-rookie-cop-turned-hero Leon S. Kennedy proclaiming “it’s up to us to take out Umbrella”. In one of RE3’s endings, Barry saves Jill from Raccoon City’s destruction and asks her “are you ready to finish this”. In Code: Veronica, Chris tells his sister Claire it’s time to finish Umbrella “once and for all”.
Smash-cut to the opening monologue of Resi 4, where Leon tells us that Umbrella has been defeated by… the stock market.
Whilst Umbrella Chronicles tried to right this wrong by involving the player in the events that led to the company’s downfall on the world stage, fans were understandably miffed that they didn’t get a more literal showdown; taking the four main characters to the core of the evil corporation, facing off with its founders and putting a dagger through its undead heart.
Years of build-up and teases and Umbrella is instead crushed by lawyers and court proceedings rather than heroes with obligatory rocket launchers and personal vendettas. Lame.
