10 Video Game Sequel Baits That Went Nowhere
2. The Other Pikmin Types - Pikmin
Some of Nintendo’s most adorable creatures, Pikmin are as quaint as they are interesting. Each subspecies has their own strengths and weaknesses, and they’re all colour-coded for clarity.
In the first game in the series, Captain Olimar crashes on the unnamed Pikmin planet and the red, yellow and blue critters help him rebuild his ship so he can leave. Throughout the game, we see Pikmin climbing into their “Onions” and flying into the air during the planet’s night cycle, to avoid the dangers of the nocturnal beasts below.
In the game’s best ending, Olimar leaves the planet and several Pikmin Onions fly up into the sky to see him off one last time. However, there are fourteen Onions that ascend - most of which are colours that are never seen anywhere else in the game like orange and green.
In Pikmin 2 we return to the planet - different parts in fact - and whilst there are few new species it certainly doesn’t answer where all these Onions came from and the kinds of adorable aliens that live in each. And with Pikmin 3, the same thing happened again.
Considering the slow rate of Pikmin actually getting sequels it’s unlikely that we’ll ever get to the point where we can match fourteen species up to these mysterious ships.
