8. Dark Souls
Slightly controversial entry here, as I know many fans of the Souls games are split. Often it comes down to which game you played first, but hear me out.
Demon's Souls was just as tough as it's successor, had slightly better weapons, and gave you a little more time to catch you breath – its the last point that makes Dark Souls so much more engrossing.
After battling a boss, Demon's Souls gave you a small amount of respite while you healed and saved. Dark Souls requires you to either back track, or risk moving on into the unknown, with the hope that you don't encounter something nasty before the next bonfire.
It was this greater sense of fluidity and connectedness between the different regions of the world that made it felt more real, capturing us in the world, making us forget boss fights are often used as a natural save point in a game and a chance to rest.
In Dark Souls, the fear and threat stayed constant so much more, resulting in a far more endlessly engaging experience.
