10 Video Game Sequels That Made You Play The Original Again

8. Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is one of the greatest RPGs ever - yes, we said it - and so the hype was positively through the roof for 2018's long-awaited follow-up, Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom.

But man, what a completely gutting letdown it was. Beyond its appealing visuals, Revenant Kingdom basically hollowed out everything that gave the original its soul and tried to dress up the fetid remnants as worthy.

For starters, only a fraction of the dialogue is voice-acted compared to its predecessor, the combat is trivial and "streamlined" to the point of tedium, and both the narrative and characters have an excessively naive whimsy to them, as though the developers tried too hard to pander to children.

Then there's the terribly dull skirmish mini-game, and the "optional" recruitment system which ultimately becomes mandatory in order to progress the main story.

If the original Ni No Kuni was a rousing, heartfelt adventure, the sequel was like candy floss - bright and sugary, but entirely lacking in substance and you felt like throwing up in a bin when you were done with it.

The only course of action was to go back to the source and remember what developer Level-5 was capable of at their level-best.
