10 Video Game Sequels That Made You Play The Original Again

7. Resident Evil 7

The mainline Resident Evil franchise has evolved numerous times throughout its history, most prominently when Resident Evil 4 toned down the survival horror aspect in favour of a more action-centric focus.

This was all well and good, except that the fifth and sixth games in the series responded to Resident Evil 4's success by doubling down on the action at the expense of horror, enough that Resident Evil 6 basically felt like the Michael Bay-ification of the franchise.

This and the sixth game's generally mediocre quality left fans of the original games chomping at the bit for something that actually felt scary again.

And so when Resident Evil 7 was announced as a return to the series' more horror-focused original tone, while unexpectedly conducted from a first-person perspective, it managed to feel both classic and fresh all at once.

Resident Evil 7's successful rejuvenation of the franchise doubtless left many returning to the earlier games in the series, their love for the IP reignited by the new quality entry, and in turn pushing those iffy memories of Resident Evil 6 to the periphery.

After two so-so outings back-to-back, the belated seventh main game was a welcome reminder of what the series was capable of at its best.
