10 Video Game Sequels That Played Things Way Too Safe

5. Far Cry 4

Call of Duty MW3
Ubisoft

Far Cry 3's influence was felt across the video game industry after it dropped, and its gameplay loop became the template for 90% of open-world titles after it. Nowhere was that more painfully evident than in the direct sequel.

Far Cry 4 boasted a Himalayan setting and Troy Baker voicing the main villain, but beyond that, it is stunningly unambitious.

The weapons are all the same and the NPCs act and fight as they did before, resulting in battles playing out near-identical to Far Cry 3's. It all makes playing the game feel like having deja vu for anyone coming off the stellar third entry.

It was quite literally Far Cry 3 - just in a new setting.
