2. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots
Ever since the release of the original Metal Gear Solid in the 90s, every subsequent entry was designed to be the 'final game' in the series. Although creator Hideo Kojima's failed attempts to walk away from the franchise became more or less an in-joke by the time the fifth title came around, for a time Metal Gear Solid 2 really looked like it could be the finale of the series. And the game itself was actually the perfect send-off for Solid Snake. A post-modern masterpiece that commented on the very nature of video game sequels themselves, MGS 2 broke ground that few games ever had - even if it wasn't quite appreciated at the time. And while the series did continue, the third game in the franchise was actually a prequel where players took the reigns of infamous MGS villain, Big Boss. For a time it seemed as though the second game really was the climax of Solid Snake's story - until the fourth title returned to finish off the present day storyline due to fan demand, anyway. Wrapping up decades worth of storylines, MGS 4 bent over backwards to provide the closure all fans wanted - even if it meant undoing all that great groundwork set up in the second game.
