10 Video Game Side-Quests That Were Better Than The Main Story
6. Siegmeyer - Dark Souls
Dark Souls doesn't have explicit "side-quests", but Siegmeyer has his own series of events that are genuinely brilliant. He is one of your few companions through the desolate world and watching his relationship with his daughter unfold to the bitter end is more powerful than any fallen god.
Dark Souls doesn't have explicit side-quests. There is of-course side-content to the intended path, which this falls under, but the game is essentially one big story. However, the interactions with specific characters are commonly deemed to be side-quests, and whilst Solaire's story is heartbreaking, it is Siegmeyer's that is far more impactful.
The entire game is about fighting the urge to go hollow, so as you follow the wholesome chirpy onion-knight through the world, reuniting him with his daughter, you can't help but feel a little bit of joy in the cold world.
But it ends in tragedy when his daughter is forced to kill him when he turns hollow, hammering home the message that everyone goes hollow. It's poignant and has more emotional value than clashing with any fallen god.
