8. Master Li - Jade Empire
Sidekick ass-kickings don't get much more flabbergasting than Master Li's heel turn in Jade Empire. Li is the Spirit Monk's mentor in the first half of the cult fave RPG, but once you defeat the villainous Emperor Sun Hai, Li reveals his true nature.
To say he merely kicked your ass is to rather undersell what the crusty, duplicitous git did - he straight-up murderised your keister, took your wares, and installed himself as the new Emperor.
Nobody ever suspects the old guy in the corner, no matter how wise he might seem, and so it's hard not to give Li a begrudging amount of credit for pulling off such a brilliantly simple ruse.
Death isn't the end, though, as players must then find they way back to the land of the living and seek revenge against Li. As mid-game rug-pulls go, this was absolutely incredible if you didn't know it was coming.
