Where other games will have had you unlock incredibly basic skills largely because they didn't think about how it would look, DLC Quest lives to make you unlock basic things.

Every aspect of the game must be unlocked. Want to pause the game? Better buy that from the shop. Want to jump or move? Might be worth buying that from the shop. Want sound? Well, not to surprise you, but you'll find it purchasable in the game's shop.

Though this might sound silly, the way it plays with the "upgrade to improve" mechanics that many other series thrive off is legitimately interesting. Starting out with such silly things to unlock makes the elaborate unlock routes you develop along your way feel all the more special.

It's not a long game by any stretch of the imagination - which is exactly why it initially attracted interest from an audience of Youtubers when it first came out. But it also doesn't need to be, because having a short, wild experience is sometimes better than a centuries-long one.

Plus, you get to put armour on your horse - and equine safety is never not cool.
