10 Video Game Spin-Offs BETTER Than The Main Franchise
9. Dynasty Warriors
Dynasty Warriors became a staple of the PS2-era. Still seeing new releases to this day, its roots can be found within Koei’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, a set of turn-based strategy games. Beginning back in 1985, it took its English name from a 14th Century novel by Luo Guanzhong and proved a big hit for Koei, seeing 14 main entries and numerous spinoffs.
Dynasty Warriors is undoubtedly the most successful of these, with sales nearly tripling those of ROTTK. Starting life in 1997 as a one-on-one fighting game, its success led to Koei turning it into the hack-and-slash saga as we know it today and quickly found its own identity.
Allowing you to slice down multiple enemies across the battlefield with limited effort, it established a format now popular amongst the hack-and-slash genre, leading to big publishers like Nintendo and Atlus collaborating with the developers.
So if you’ve had a stressful day and just want to relax, it’s the perfect series for some mindless action.
